Starting a new life as a single mom, Diana moves back to her childhood neighborhood. Along with her three daughters, Janet, Sue and Whitney, they all reside in a house on Gary, Indiana’s Jackson Street. Going back to her hometown, Diana felt it would be safe to be in a familiar place to start over after losing her husband.  She moves into a house within her street not knowing its past. Once she settles in, Michael, a previous resident of her house, triggers her memory of his past. He also shares about their encounter, but finds amusement in making her relive it.
Michael reminds Diana of the time when they were young and eighteen and he was still good friends with Susie. Michael and Susie’s friendship was torn by Diana’s urge to stay popular during her last year of high school. Feeling victorious, Diana disregarding the results of her pranks and bets and leaves it behind as she goes off to college.
Now that she came back, Michael’s rage erupts and he makes sure she feels every bit of his misery. Her return is made difficult to adjust as Diana is constantly distracted with her past. Meanwhile, her present or three daughters divert their attention away from their mother’s stressful state and dove in to their school life. Baby Whitney is busy in 7th grade, but her two eldest sisters are stirring up drama at Roosevelt High school. Janet and Sue stay far from their mother’s problems as they deal with their own.
But are their problems intertwining? Can Diana’s misery lead to a horrible future? Is Diana screaming loud enough? Is her agony deep enough? Did Michael deliver their story fully? If so why does he keep asking…Is It Scary?
